Protect your ears and gear. Start low and raise slowly. Pink and white noise are fatiguing — never test at loud levels on headphones you're wearing.

Levels are relative to your device's digital full scale. For line-level testing, set the device's own volume to a known position (often maximum) and leave it there.

Which signal?

Pink noise — equal energy per octave, sounds balanced to the ear. Best for speaker placement, room checks and SPL calibration.

White noise — equal energy per Hz, very bright. Good for spotting crackles, dropouts and hiss in cables.

1 kHz tone — steady sine for setting gain structure, checking meters and line levels.

Music — a real-world check, loudness-matched to the selected level.

Invert right — with Both selected on two speakers, the centre image should collapse and bass thin out. If it gets fuller, one speaker is wired out of phase.
